Multiplying a concept that works: the role of franchising

It's not just creating an innovative project that can be interesting.

Why not look before launching to see if a brand, having the same concept as you, is looking for someone to launch a franchise?

A franchise is a commercial contract that the franchisee signs with the owner of a trademark called the franchisor. The franchisor gives them the right to use their brand in exchange for a fee.

This is different from a subsidiary because the subsidiary entirely belongs to the brand manager while the franchise belongs to the franchisee.

More than 80% of shops on a commercial street operate under franchise contract in Belgium according to the website: Franchise.be.

Franchising has many advantages:

  • The project is less risky: the concept already works, it has been tested.
  • You have access to the franchisor's existing reputation.
  • The franchisor has already done enormous work in finding suppliers, marketing (logo, graphics), administrative and logistical matters...
  • You can benefit from economies of scale for your purchases.
  • You're no longer launching alone because in a way you work as a team with the franchisor.

The formula still has its disadvantages:

  • You pay compensation, which can be substantial, to the franchisor.
  • You are less free to make your project 100% to your taste.
