You're thinking of starting an entrepreneurial project. The side self-employed status (indépendant complémentaire) is a great solution to:
Test your idea
Challenge yourself
Launch a passion project
Have a positive impact on the world
Gain more freedom
Develop one of your passions
Give meaning to your work
Regain your energy
Earn an additional income
A side self-employed person is someone for whom entrepreneurship is not the main activity. That’s why not everyone in Belgium is eligible to become self-employed as a side activity.
You must be either:
- Employed (worker, employee, civil servant, or appointed teacher) for at least 50%,
- Unemployed – in this case, it's called the “springboard to self-employment”, independent springboard.
- Someone who is receiving sickness benefits but is still bound by an employment contract.
- Retired,
- A student,
- In a notice period (if it lasts more than 3 months).
Being self-employed as a side activity lets you keep the security and benefits of your main job.
